DESIGNED FOR RESURRECTION

Death is certain, yet we were created to be an eternal being. Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life, guarantees our perishable human body will change into an eternal resurrection body.

When Corrie Ten Boom of The Hiding Place fame was a little girl in Holland, her first realization of death came after a visit to the home of a neighbor who had died. It impressed her that someday her parents would also die. Corrie’s father comforted her with words of wisdom. “Corrie, when you and I go to Amsterdam, when do I give you your ticket?” “Why, just before we get on the train,” she replied. “Exactly,” her father said, “and our wise Father in heaven knows when we’re going to need things too. Don’t run out ahead of Him, Corrie. When the time comes that some of us will have to die, you will look into your heart and find the strength you need–just in time.”   Today in the Word, MBI, October, 1991, p. 30.

Death is certain.   There is an element of fear.  The timing of our own death is unknown.  This can lead to worry, unrest, and being afraid.  However, there’s assurance in God’s words of our own resurrection.

Eternal Beings    We were created to be eternal beings, for eternal purposes!   There is resurrection.  There is new life. A body that will never die. A future with God forever.

RESURRECTION OF JESUS

EASTER is the celebration of the cardinal truth of Christianity – Jesus rose from the dead! Because Jesus rose , we will rise.

1 Corinthians 15:13.  IF there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

Paul, a persecutor of the church, experienced the power of a changed life. While on his way to imprison believers, Jesus intercepted him and he was converted. The travelers with him took him to Damascus.  The prophet Annanias came and prayed and Paul’s eyes were immediately opened.  Paul, missionary pastor and author of  much of the New Testament, writes of the resurrection of Jesus in 1 Corinthians 15:

Paul lays the facts of the resurrection and continues to link that to our resurrection.

  • Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
  • he was buried,
  • he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
  • and he appeared to Peter, the Twelve apostles and over 500 eyewitnesses eyewitness, James and Paul himself.

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

He repeats it again in v 16,

“For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.  17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.  Then those also who have fallen asleep (died) in Christ are lost.

And another affirmation in verse 20,

“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead!”

JESUS’ RESURRECTION GUARANTEES OUR RESURRECTION

The first natural birth came through the first man Adam.  The first spiritual birth (firstfruits) came through Jesus.  The resurrection of Jesus guarantees resurrection for those who love Him.

In the Israelite community, the firstfruits of their crops was brought to the Lord as a guarantee that the harvest would be fruitful.  You can read more about that in Leviticus 23.   The first of the crops were brought as a guarantee of the harvest. So Jesus became the firstfruits of those who will be resurrected.

RESURRECTION BODY DESIGNED FOR ETERNITY

Our human body will take on a new body in resurrection!

I Corinthians 15:35-41

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

Jesus likened his own death and resurrection to that of a seed.

“Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”  John 12:23

CHANGED BODY 1 Corinthians 15:42-49

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;  it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. 1 Corinthians 15:42-44

Perishable to imperishable

Dishonor to glory

Natural body to a spiritual body

1 Corinthians 15:42-44

This dusty human body changes to imperishable, powerful, everlasting new body fit for heaven.

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,  who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Philippians 3:20-12

We know that when He shall appear, we shall be like Him;

for we shall see Him as He is.. 1 John 3:2

…and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7

GOD INTENDED RESURRECTION

2 Corinthians 5:4 When this earthly tent is destroyed (by death) we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven not built by human hands.    5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing what is to come.  6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.

This is the reason we are living – our lives were a creation of God, to be for God, to live forever with God.

CONCLUSION

Because Jesus rose from the dead, we, too, will rise from the dead.  We will be changed from this human body to an eternal body like the resurrected body of Jesus.  This has been God’s intention for us – to be with him forever in his eternal state, enjoying the presence of the One who gave His life for you and me.

Take some moments to read through 1 Corinthians 15, the great Resurrection chapter.  Let those words comfort you.  There’s much more than what we just covered in this blog.  Let me know your thoughts and the secrets you are gleaning!
